It may be time to re-evaluate what others see when they click to your blogsite. The last blog-advice article you read probably gave you 5 things to add to your blog, this article will do the opposite and you will be glad you did it. You will find some useful ideas to help keep your blog fresh.

Bloggers love their blogs. A personal or business blog is like designing and decorating your own house exactly the way you want it. You do not have to ask for permission or opinions from anyone for the changes you make. It's all yours to control with total freedom.

The bad news is that your blog may be suffering from all that freedom. As stated earlier, bloggers love to tweak their blogs. Adding this gadget and that widget, maybe a cute countdown clock or some funny videos along the side. Everywhere you go on-line you are offered the next best and most vital thing to add to your blog.

It may be time to re-evaluate what others see when they click to your blogsite. The last blog-advice article you read probably gave you 5 things to add to your blog, this article will do the opposite and you will be glad you did it.

5 tips to improve your blog:

  1. Step away and look at your blog like a stranger. What jumps out at you first, where do your eyes go? Is the subject clear? Is it easy to become a subscriber or do they have to search for the way to do that?
  2. Routinely delete the extra gadgets that seemed like a good idea at the time. A cluttered sidebar is distracting and slows down the upload for your readers.
  3. Change your background. A nice solid white is the kindest to the eyes and to a reader's concentration. All the fun templates are so tempting in themselves, but once your text and gadgets are added, it can become an eye-frustrating mess. Even if it started out cute. if white is too boring, then choose another color but keep it solid if you can.
  4. Delete the music or place the music controls at the top of the blog so that your readers can mute it if they choose. Music tastes are so varied, why would you want to push away a potential subscribers because they do not love country music?
  5. Keep it short. The prime length for a blog post is between 300 and 600 words. On-line readers are very different from print magazine or book readers. There is something about the Internet that has fostered the desire for short and quick news and entertainment. Most readers will skim the first few sentences to see if the piece grabs their attention and even if it is interesting to them, they will seldom stay for more than four or five paragraphs. Bullet-points are eye-grabbing and will draw them in.

These simple steps can clean up a messy or cluttered blog and help you get back to why you began blogging in the first place. It was not about the gadgets and decorations, it was about the words.
