When it comes to web hosting, reputation is everything. There are hundreds and hundreds of different web hosting companies aggressively competing for your business. It seems like a new one pops up weekly. Yet, choosing the right web hosting company for blog or website is an integral first step in firmly establishing your online presence.

However, finding the best host for your needs not be a formidable task if you keep these tips in mind.

Clarify what you are trying to accomplish with your website or blog. Do you just want a place to share images and ideas with friends and family or do you want to create a site to promote a local business or to sell your products or services online?

Explore your options. If you are attempting to build a vigorous e-commerce site, you will require payment processors, a payment system, shopping carts and/or a billing system, a scripting library, log analysis, merchant accounts and more. You will also likely require serious analytics to help you to understand your web presence. To target marketing efforts it is important to be able to trace visitor paths, analyze visitor scenarios, URL parameters, trace visitor paths, measure conversions and more.

Cut through the hype by researching legitimate customer reviews. If a company consistently has problems, the grumblers will surface. Many new hosting companies are offering enticing prices or web building and management tools to encourage customers to try their service. Avoid being scammed by unscrupulous web hosts that use a diverse array of “tricks” to ensnare you.

Avoid companies that offer unlimited space or bandwidth. It is impossible for any company to fulfill this promise. The hosts themselves are limited to a designated amount of disk space or bandwidth. To offer unlimited bandwidth is false and misleading advertisement.

Look for a company that offers 24/7 customer service and technical support. Your host is worthless if you site fails to function and you can’t obtain technical support when you need it. If you site is down, you are making a poor professional appearance and could be losing money from lost transactions. Make sure that the phones are answered by a “live” person and not an automated system that may have someone call you next week or next month.

Be wary of any hosting company that does not offer a full money-back guarantee if you are dissatisfied with their services. Some unscrupulous hosts require an annual plan. There is no guarantee that although you have paid for 12 months of service they will be still around.

In order to attract your business, some web hosts offer free domain name registration and offer to register the domain name for you. This is a “red flag” in that they register the domain name in their own name. If you decide to change hosts for whatever reason, you will lose the domain name. Legally it belongs to the hosting company and you have no legal claim. If you have worked hard to build your brand, all your hard work will be for naught.

Steer clear of hosting companies that promise 100 percent uptime. No host can realistically offer this promise. Every host must be down at sometime for regularly scheduled maintenance and upgrades to the server. Reputable web host claim 98 to 99 percent uptime. Read the uptime guarantee carefully so that you are not in for any unpleasant surprises.
